History Instructor of Passaic County Technical Institute (PCTI), Marissa Timmerman, was selected to take part in the national Woodrow Wilson HistoryQuest Fellowship. Participation in this immersive initiative saw that Marissa attended an intensive weeklong summer seminar with the program’s partner, the Institute of Play.
Participation in the fellowship is by nomination. It includes a ten-month follow-up program with two mid-year workshops and coaching sessions by the Institute of Play staff. The Institute of Play is nationally known for its use of gaming and play – digital and otherwise –to develop teachers, engage students, and individualize learning.
The Woodrow Wilson HistoryQuest Institute focuses on ways to introduce game-like learning in the classroom that meets content standards and engages students in the study of history. Instructors learn to develop games which act as content-rich learning tools and encourage students to think about the rules, movements, resources, and structures behind American history as they would understand the assets in a game.
Marissa Timmerman participated in the entire HistoryQuest Summer Institute and received forty hours of professional development that will enhance her work with students for years to come.
