PCTVS Teams with Jets and Nike to Pilot Girls Flag Football

The Passaic County Technical-Vocational School District (PCTVS) is excited to announce it will be one of eight high schools to participate in the pilot season of the New Jersey High School Girls Flag Football League. The new addition to the high school athletics landscape is the result of a collaboration between the New York Jets and Nike. With the inaugural season of the sport scheduled to kick off this spring, the official announcement was made on February 3 in recognition of the 35th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

With an “EmpowHER” message, the New York Jets and Nike believe that the opportunity for girls to play football is long overdue. “We really want to grow the game of football,” said Jets Community Relations Vice President Jesse Liner, “and make it more accessible to females. We feel the benefits derived from playing football should be available to all genders.”

The two powerhouse sports organizations are supporting PCTVS and the other participating schools in the ambitious endeavor by providing all of the necessary funding, equipment, and uniforms to make the launch of the league a success. Additionally, a content series will be filmed that follows the participants’ unique stories in their first year playing the sport. The seven-game season is set to culminate with a first annual Jets x Nike Girls Flag Football Invitational at MetLife Stadium.

Over forty PCTVS students have expressed interest in taking the field, with practices scheduled to begin in April. PCTVS Athletic Director Nic Nese is excited about the possibilities. “The Jets and Nike are really going above and beyond in helping to empower young women athletes through this initiative. We are absolutely thrilled and feel extremely grateful to be one of the schools given this incredible opportunity,” he said.
